Agreed. Let me hear him with Steely Dan or Parliament before any solo stuff.

Im glad that most people share my opinion on the solo. It's not like I am putting him down, but rather I find it disappointing that once you've seen him live performing different tracks and playing solos you've heard it all. It is so important to keep people guessing what's next.

I am not here to defend Dennis, even though I am a huge fan. Alot of what was said in this thread is undeniably true.

There is something alot of you don't understand. You seem to think every human being who plays drums and is famous has to keep his/her fans guessing all the time and always reinventing himself/herself.

Well folks, this is not true.

Sure, its great to have drummers like Dave Weckl, and Virgil Donati who are NEVER happy with where they are in their playing, and are always striving to get better. This is a great thing. However it is not the case with Dennis.

Dennis plays all from feel and from the heart. He is best in musical situation, thats when things come out of him that he never could play just by himself in a solo/clinic setting. Trust me when I say this, but I have bootleg videos of Dennis with the Free Spirits (John Mclaughlin, Joey Defrancesco) from the early 90's with the most ridiculously sick drumming I have ever seen in my life. This is where Dennis shines.

Also, he dosen't really care what people think of him. He is content in where he is. He is getting older now, mid forties, and he feels he just does not have to prove anything to anyone anymore. He still will blow the heads off of younger people who are new to seeing/hearing him. But to us veteran listerns, it might get a little repetative. He will be the first one to admit, he can't do the thing's Virgil can do, but likewise Virgil can't do alot of the things Dennis can.

To know Dennis Chambers as a player, is to know the personality behind him. I know Dennis personally, and I just get him. I see alot of myself in his playing, I CAN play, but I am lazy in alot of ways, and don't always have the inspiration to wan't to get better sometimes. I believe early in his life he practiced a ton, but then it was off to playing gigs and basically had no time to practice.

He once told me that he does not even have a drumset in his house because when he gets off the road the last thing he wants to do is even LOOK at a drumset.

In a nutshell, you mix his hectic schedule of playing in all different bands, with different styles, recording dates, touring, and then mix in his lazy type of personality and you can see why he has not grown as a player much over the years in the way described by the thread starter above.

I hope I was able to clear some things up, I don't take any of what anyone said personally, and I realize it was not attacking Dennis in anyway. But this is just how it is.

Take Dennis for what he is, a groove/chops powerhouse. He is Dennis Chambers, an individual with an individual style. Just as unique as all the other drummers we have come to know and love.

I see what you mean Nevesis. Perhaps it's just that I (and some others here) put one's evolution as a drummer at similar status with something like chops and groove.
I don't care how good someone can play, the development has to be there too! Now blaming Dennis' lack of progress over the years on his personality just doesn't do it for me. You mentioned that he gets sick of playing drums when he's not on tour. Now I have heard several others say this and taking some time off is fine, but why not use the time off tour to work on some new concepts? I am sure that this would be refreshing for us listeners and probably leave him more refreshed when starting a new tour.

Oh no, here we go again...

    ROUND 2...

    FIGHT!

P.S. Nev, your quote should have been "I see a lot of HIM in MY playing" - not the other way around... C'mon!
